Due to the government closure, the official start of tax season will now be January 31st. The IRS announced that is the day they will begin to process returns that are e-filed or sent in on paper. Ironically, this date is only one day later than the 2012 date--January 30th. This was due to the passing of the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) which caused the IRS to make major changes to their tax software systems.
Remember, the fastest way to be issued a refund is by e-filing and using the direct deposit option. The deadline for 2013 tax returns is still April 15th, 2014. This deadline is set by statute and will not be postponed. Taxpayers can always file for a six month extension if they are unable to get their return completed by the deadline. This extension can also be filed electronically.
At WCA, the delay of the tax season processing does not slow us down. We will be continuing to prepare returns and have them ready to submit starting January 31st on behalf of our clients.
